What is Hyperactivity?

Hyperactivity in dogs is when a dog has lots, if not, too much energy! They seem to be very excited and are very 'hyper', fidget and move a lot. Most of the time, dogs who are hyperactive are unable to pay attention and can be very impulsive. Dogs who are hyperactive tend to bark and run around a lot, even when there aren't many people about.

What causes Hyperactivity?

When trying to figure out why your dog is hyperactive, it can be a little tricky to know, or even understand why. Hyperactivity in dogs can stem from boredom and a lack of stimulation. Think about the way you are interacting with your dog. What types of activities and exercise your dog is getting daily? Each dog, breed and age of a dog is different, so the amount of exercise required varies.

Causes of hyperactivity in dogs can be a little deeper than just how much exercise they are getting. It can be down to breed characteristics too, conditioned behaviour or their age, for example if they're a puppy, they tend to naturally have a bit more energy! It is very important that puppies, in their formative years get the right attention, the correct training and socialise. It is essential to take extra care during a puppies early years to prevent any hyperactive behaviour.

In terms of conditioned behaviour, it is very important that owners, stay persistent and discipline their dogs. It is very easy to give up after many failed attempts but it's important to stay patient. For example when an owner tries more than once to train a dog, the dog will take longer to learn the trick. The owner doesn't have the patience to outlast the dog's hyperactivity.

Most important hyperactive behaviour can be caused from your dog not having a proper diet. This can be things from their food, their sleeping pattern, energy levels and brain functionality. Its very important that your dog gets the correct nutrients.
